Interesting Facts About Halloween…

Hope your week is going well.  We’re on the cusp of some beautiful weather!!!  A few interesting facts about Halloween that maybe you didn’t know… wait until you read #8!

  • Halloween is more than 2,000 years old.
  • Some traditions included those of women hoping to find a husband by throwing apple peals over a shoulder hoping to see their husband’s initials in the pattern or the first winner of bobbing for apples would marry first.
  • Sugar rationing during World War II put a hold on trick-or-treating.
  • Halloween is the second largest commercial holiday in the United States.
  • Jack-o-lanterns originated in Ireland and were once carved out of turnips, potatoes and beets.
  • The state of Illinois produces up to five times more pumpkins than any other state!
  • Candy Corn candy was originally called “chicken feed” and has been around since the 1800s.
  • The Michael Myers mask originated on the original 1978 film from a Halloween mask of William Shatner playing Captain Kirk from Star Trek that was painted white.
  • The fastest pumpkin carving took ONLY 16.47 seconds.
  • Skittles and M&Ms are the two most popular Halloween candies.
  • Harry Houdini passes away on Halloween in 1926.
  • There’s a statue of Jason Voorhees (from the movie Friday the 13th) at the bottom of a lake in Crosby, Minnesota.
  • The word witch doesn’t actually have a negative meaning… it comes from the old English wicce meaning “wise woman.” It’s actually a sign of respect.
  • The world’s heaviest jack-o-lantern weighs 2,684 pounds.
  • The colors orange and black come from orange signaling the harvest of autumn and black as a symbol of darkness reminding people Halloween was once a festival marking the boundaries between life and death.
  • Pumpkins are actually classified as fruits… not vegetables.
  • Candy wasn’t given out to trick-or-treaters until the 1950s.
  • After years of terrible pranking on Halloween night, in 1933 Halloween was dubbed “Black Halloween” caused by the millions of dollars in damage from vandals across the U.S.

  • The fastest pumpkin carving took only 16.47 seconds!
  • Not sure about this one… in Bellville, Missouri you can not ask for candy on Halloween unless you are under the age of 13.
  • It’s believed that if a child is born on Halloween, they will be able to talk to ghosts.
